Nevada, specifically
One state produces most of America's gold, all of its primary lithium, all of its barite and all of its magnesite — and almost none of the downstream capacity that turns any of it into a finished product.

It started with a hole in the ground
Nevada exists, as a state, largely because of what was found under Mount Davidson in 1859. The Comstock Lode put 25,000 people into Virginia City within fifteen years, funded the rebuilding of San Francisco, and forced the invention of the timbering method that made deep hardrock mining possible anywhere. Lincoln proclaimed statehood on 31 October 1864 — eight days before an election he needed to win, with the state constitution telegraphed to Washington at a cost of $4,313.27 because the paper copies had not arrived.
That is not a museum story. The same rock that made the Comstock is why Nevada leads the country in gold today, and why the lithium, the barite, the magnesite and the copper are there. What has changed in 167 years is not the geology. It is what happens to the ore after it leaves the ground.
Nevada is the case study for the whole argument. It is the only state producing lithium compounds from primary extraction. Magnesite is mined by one company, in Nevada. All American barite comes from three companies working four operations inside its borders. And Nevada produced about 64% of US gold in 2025 — enough that, counted alone, it would rank among the top ten gold-producing countries on earth.
The Nevada Mining Association counts more than 20 essential minerals in the state, four of them on the federal critical minerals list. Fourteen and a half thousand people work in the state's mineral industry at an average of $119,000 a year, the third-highest pay of any private sector in Nevada.
What Nevada does not have much of is downstream capacity. Thacker Pass is under construction, not producing. Rhyolite Ridge is permitted but pre-decision. Robinson's byproduct molybdenum is one of nine such operations nationally. The ore body is world-class; the plant list is short. That gap is the opportunity.
